RifleRifle team falls to Memphis at invitational
N.C. State’s rifle team came up short Saturday at the Newkirk Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn., losing to Memphis 4,536-4,527.
Coach Keith Miller said it was a good performance for the team, which scored a season high in the smallbore and overall score. The team score of 4,527 is also a new school record, Miller said.
“We’re very proud of our shooters’ performances,” Miller said. “We had another good mix of contributions from our freshmen and our upperclassmen. We had hoped to edge out Memphis, but it wasn’t meant to be. That’s OK, though, as it doesn’t take away the fact that we had our best overall match for the year. It was another good step in the right direction.”
Jennifer Marshall and Matt Gifford scored new personal bests in the smallbore, tallying 572 and 563, respectively.
“It was good to see Jennifer put up her second consecutive air rifle score in the 580s,” Miller said. “Even better, she set a personal record in smallbore with a strong 572 — her first total over 570 with the new target. This also sets a new school record for the new target, since it’s the highest smallbore total for a Wolfpack shooter so far this year.”
Tori Kostecki and Katie Siegert set new personal bests in air rifle, scoring 575 and 574, respectively.
“Tori Kostecki’s 575, while another record for her, did not count towards the team score,” Miller said. “It was very good to see her shoot her second consecutive score of 570 or better, though. She may have just moved up to the first team for air rifle. Katie Siegert got back on track in air rifle, firing a personal best 574. Unfortunately, her score did not count toward the team total in this match.”
Miller said if Siegert’s score counted, the Pack would have defeated Memphis.
Miller said choosing the first team for competitions is often difficult for the coaches.
“This time we got it right in smallbore, but not in air rifle,” he said. “With lots of improvements by the freshmen on the team, it can be difficult to predict who will perform at what level prior to any given match. Hopefully we’ve got a better idea now of who to designate for our first teams.”
The Pack is now 12-3 overall (1-3 in the Great America Rifle Conference and 8-0 in the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference).
Next up, State hosts the fifth SEARC meet of the season on Saturday.
