GymnasticsTeam has two meets over weekend
This weekend the No. 24 N.C. State (2-4) gymnastics team traveled north to compete in two meets in as many days. First competing against Rutgers Friday night and then against No. 19 Penn State on Saturday.Friday, State lost to Rutgers who had a team total of 191.800 points. Saturday, the Wolfpack with a team total of 192.625 fell to Penn State who had a team total of 193.850 points. During the meet against the Nittany Lions, State posted its highest team score on the bars, recording a score of 48.375. Freshman Taylor Seaman led the Wolfpack by winning her first career event title on the vault with a score of 9.75, while also finishing in second place on the floor with a score of 9.85.The team will see its next action this Friday night in Reynold’s Coliseum when it hosts the Governor’s Cup. Teams attending include Maryland, North Carolina, and Towson.
Women’s tennis Women’s team upset by Arkansas
Saturday No. 47 Arkansas upset the visiting No. 32 N.C. State women’s tennis team (2-1) by a score of 5-2.In singles play State struggled, only winning two of its six matches. Sophomore Alejandra Guerra led the Wolfpack by winning her No. 4 match in two sets 6-0, 6-1, and junior Julia Roach who won in two sets 6-4, 6-1.In doubles play State lost two of its three matches, including the regionally ranked tandem of Guerra and freshman Daria Petrovic who lost 8-4.The loss is the first for the Wolfpack this season. The team will see it’s next action this Friday at 4 p.m. against Penn State.
Track & Field Team competes at UNC
The N.C. State track and field team competed this weekend in the UNC Fast Times meet, held in Chapel Hill.The meet marked the first time all season that the team’s long-distance runners competed. Several male runners competed in the 800 meter, with sophomore Gavin Coombs finishing second with a time of 1:55.13 and junior Stephen Furst finishing third with a time of 1:56.28.The women’s long-distance runners competed in some events as well with senior Julia Lucas finishing first in the mile with a time of 4:47.69, and senior Kristina Roth finishing second with a time of 4:55.24.Also, senior Mitchell Pope guaranteed himself a spot in the NCAA Championships with his toss of 63’10.25”.The team will see its next action when some team members travel to New York to compete in the New Balance Games and some return to North Carolina to compete.
Swimming & DivingTigers tame Pack swimmers
The men’s swimming and diving team got wins from redshirt sophomore Stephen Mellor, sophomore Andrew Lester, redshirt senior Steve Cowling and sophomore diver Austin Hampton on Saturday at Clemson, but it wasn’t enough in a 177-123 defeat at the hands of the Tigers. Mellor won the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard butterfly, as well as the 400-yard individual medley. Lester won the 1,650-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. Cowling won the 100-yard backstroke, and Hampton won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.The women’s team also lost, 168-131, posting its highest losing score of the season. Freshman Jessica Stewart won the 200-yard breaststroke, and senior Lindsay Barwegen finished first in the 500-yad freestyle. Freshman Sarah Merritt won the 400-yard individual medley, and freshman Patrice Dason won the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Emily Cheffins won the 3-meter diving. The teams will return to action at ACC championships, the women’s swimming championships and the men’s and women’s diving championships Feb. 14-Feb. 17 in Chapel Hill and the men’s swimming championships Feb. 21-Feb. 24 in Chapel Hill.
