The men’s tennis team played its first home matches of the year at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Saturday, defeating High Point 6-1, Gardner-Webb 6-1 and The Citadel 7-0.
Coach Jon Choboy said he was pleased with his team’s performance.
“They did pretty good,” Choboy said. “Playing three matches, everyone is coming in fresh. The guys came out with good energy and I think the last match was one of our better of the two matches.”
During the final doubles match against The Citadel, juniors Ben Zink and Nick Cavaday defeated the No. 1 doubles team in the Citadel’s lineup and the No. 20 doubles pair in the nation Danny Dossetor and James Eason 8-0.
“They just came out of the gates and really went after them right away,” Choboy said. “Stayed on them the whole time and never really let the guys get up, so they did a good job. They just made the basic shots, and good rhythm comes off of that.”
Senior William Noblitt, No. 2 in the lineup for the Wolfpack in singles beat The Citadel’s James Eason 6-3, 6-1 and said he was tired but eventually picked up his game.
“Starting out, I was a little tired,” Noblitt said. “But I told myself, ‘Let’s just get it over with,’ and picked my game up and just focus on things that I can do well.”
Noblitt did receive a penalty point for saying something that the referee thought was inappropriate.
“I just said something about myself sucking, and they gave me a point penalty,” he said.
Senior Andre Iriarte also defeated his opponent from The Citadel, finding his opponent’s weak points and using it to his advantage.
“He didn’t really move me around as much, which I was hoping for him not to move me around a lot,” Iriarte said. “I took advantage of that. I was taking my two steps, and I was moving him more than he was moving me, and actually I went to my advantage.”
State’s overall record is 3-0, while The Citadel, Gardner-Webb, and High Point all are 0-1 on the season.
The Pack will play a doubleheader this Saturday at home, starting against UNC-Wilmington at 10 a.m., followed by a match against Winthrop at 2:30 p.m.
