It’s finally here, the long wait is over — the new building of the Carmichael Complex is finished. Today is the official grand opening of the long-anticipated addition. On March 28, 2006 the University began work on this project to increase available space to students for working out along with extra space for classes to meet. After delays to the project, the doors are set to open to students, faculty and staff to utilize the new equipment and space.
There are many wonderful features to the new building — and the long wait to students will be worth it.
The new workout room on the third floor is great. It’s filled with the latest equipment for students to use, like new treadmills and other machines equipped to listen to the multiple flat screen TVs that line the wall. While working out, students are now able to look outside, rather than a windowless cinderblock wall. The new studios also provide more room and will free up space on the basketball courts.
The addition of a Port City Java to the complex is nice, because it will give students an option of getting a fruit smoothie after a workout or a cup of coffee on their way to class.
As there is much excitement over the new addition, there are a few areas of disappointment. There is no way of walking from the old to the new building without having to walk outside and there are no changing areas available in the new building.
With all the focus given to the new part of the Carmichael Complex, attention must now be given to the old section as it’s in desperate need of renovation and a facelift. Now is the time to begin.
The locker rooms must have a thorough touch up, as they are becoming significantly outdated. Another area in need of attention is our pool and both of the pools should be brought up to date and transformed into a modern aquatics facility.
The University took long enough to get the new building of Carmichael open, much longer than it should have taken, but in the end the product is above average. Time must now be devoted to bringing up the quality of the rest of the Carmichael Complex.
