The holiday season is rapidly approaching us as we complete this last week of classes. D.H. Hill is becoming more crowded by the day, and the line at Hill of Beans could give anyone a headache. But until we have the opportunity to enjoy our long break from classes, we must first complete what we have started: a painfully long semester.
Reminiscing about this semester, a few things occurred to me. For starters, the past 18 or so weeks went by incredibly fast. I can honestly say I gave my best effort most every time I attempted an assignment in my classes and took tests. But when I compare the effort I put into the grades I received, there is a seemingly negative correlation. The more effort and studying I put in didn’t necessarily equate with better grades, much different from last year.
Also, I immersed myself in more campus activities. I’ve been so busy this semester that I’ve barely had time to breathe, and, although I’ve done my fair share of complaining about lack of time to do anything, I still manage to get everything done. The most important thing I learned this semester regarding academics is time management is everything, and it’s possible to be engaged in many activities.
With final exams officially starting next week and some under way, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, your health should be of primary importance to you. If you don’t give your body the rest, nutrition and exercise it needs, then how can you expect it to help you perform well on finals? Putting yourself first is the first step to doing well. After this you can start studying. Notice that I said studying, not cramming. Getting a head start now, as hard as it is to crack open those books, will only help reduce your stress level when it comes time for test taking.
Whatever you all decide to do for the holiday season away from classes, keep a few things in perspective. Remember we have much to be thankful for and this season is the best way to start showing your love and concern for those around you, even if you’ve shied away from it in the past. Take time for yourself as well, and it wouldn’t hurt to reflect on the semester and look for ways to improve for the upcoming one. But most importantly, spend time with the family God gave you and know that they really do love you.
When all is said and done, you will be free. For some of you lucky seniors, you will be graduating. I envy your accomplishments, fortitude and dedication toward finishing your degrees. Your successful completion of college is no small achievement, and as so, I salute you all.
For the rest of us still stuck for at least another semester, take the much-deserved time off from class to rejuvenate your mind, body and get psyched up once again for an exciting spring semester. Good things lie just around the corner, so before you can bask in your time off, do yourself a favor and hit the books now.
