Corey Smith, an NFL free agent and a former football player at N.C. State, remains lost at sea after he and three friends went missing Saturday after going on a fishing trip last weekend.
The group, which included Smith, NFL football player Marquis Cooper, William Bleakly and Nick Schuyler, two football alums from the University of South Florida, was reported missing Sunday by family members.
A massive Coast Guard search began Sunday and Schuyler was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, clinging to the fishing boat, which had capsized 30 plus miles off the coast of Clearwater, Fla.
The Coast Guard suspended the search for the boaters Tuesday afternoon.
Smith, Bleakly and Cooper are all currently presumed dead according to various media outlets and the Coast Guard.
Smith came to NCSU in the late 1990s and played for both Mike O’Cain and Chuck Amato during his time in Raleigh.
In his pro career he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.
