President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Tuesday to mixed reviews from both politicians and the public. The massive $787 billion bill includes appropriations for everything from government loans to tax credits. Here are some of the numbers that could have an effect on N.C. State students.
$4,700,000,000 for the “Broadband Technology Opportunities Program,” which would include expanding the number of public computers available in places like libraries and community colleges.
$16,800,000,000 for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and grants, which could stimulate more funding for research on campus
$3,400,000,000 for fossil energy research and development
1,200,000,000 for youth activities including creating summer employment for people less than 24 years old
15,840,000,000 for higher education, including an increase in Pell Grant maximums and for student aid
53,600,000,000 for the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, which includes funding for state-funded schools and universities
? an unknown dollar amount from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund that must be used to “mitigate the need to raise tuition and fees for in-state students” or to modernize or repair facilities. Universities are prohibited from using these funds for endowments or for athletic or religious facilities.
