The men’s basketball team (15-10, 5-7) watched a 17-point second half lead diminish to just one point with 8.7 seconds remaining before senior Courtney Fells stepped in to knock down two free throws as the Wolfpack would go on to seal a 72-67 win over Virginia.
The Pack began the game on a 15-2 run and would eventually build an 18-point lead, before the Cavaliers went on a run to narrow the gap to just four at halftime. State opened the second half hot, going on a 17-4 run before turnovers allowed the Cavs back in the game.
The Wolfpack committed 20 turnovers in the game, including seven by sophomore Javi Gonzalez. Gonzalez, after scoring a season-high against UNC-Chapel Hill on Wednesday, went 4-4 from the field for nine points. Freshman C.J. Williams led State with 16 points in just 17 minutes of playing time. Williams went 6-8 from the field including 4-6 from 3-point range.
The win is the team’s third in it’s last four games–all of which came against ACC opponents. The Pack now sits at ninth place in the conference trailing Maryland and Virginia Tech, both of which are 6-6 in the ACC.
The Pack travel to Wake Forest Wednesday to play the Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, N.C.
