Student Body Treasurer Scott Lassiter resigned from his position in Student Government, effective next Wednesday night after the Student Senate meeting.
This announcement comes a day after the resignation of his comptroller Lindsay Womack who is studying abroad this semester, and three hours
before the announcement of the resignation of his associate treasurer Kelsey Whitehouse.
Lassiter could not be reached for comment Thursday.
His e-mail to the Student Government list-serv informed officials of his decision after discussing it with some people within Student Government.
“Personal circumstances have made this tough decision necessary. I’ll be helping to oversee appropriations and finalizing the draft budget in the week ahead,” the e-mail stated.
Last year’s student body treasurer David Foxx resigned in late January as well.
Student Body President Jay Dawkins said according to statutes, the Student Senate Finance Chair Jason Smith will take over.
Smith also took over the position for Foxx last year.
“Statutes require us to have a replacement election,” Dawkins said.
He said if the resignation is within more than 30 days of the general student body election, an election for that position would need to take place as well.
“In theory, this time next month, we would have a special election only to turn around and have a regular student body election two weeks later,”
Dawkins said.
Smith said Lassiter included him in the decision before resigning.
“I encouraged him to stay in it …[but] at some point, he had other obligations and it’s a very demanding job. It’s a lot to deal with. There’s a lot of politics. And that’s why he left,” Smith said.
According to Smith, the job is a stifling one even though that may not be the reason Lassiter left.
“Any time you’re dealing with money, you have people coming all over the place trying to get a piece of it,” he said.
There are political regulations, University regulations and obligations to the student body, Smith said.
