After its postseason hopes were ended a week ago, the Pack came into the game against Virginia Tech hoping to play the spoiler role and upset the No. 15 team in the country. However, the Hokies had other plans. Behind a balanced offensive attack, Tech had its way with the Pack defense, scoring almost at will.
The Pack got off to the wrong start as it fumbled on two of its first three offensive plays, one by quarterback Russell Wilson and the other by wide receiver Darrell Davis. Virginia Tech capitalized on the turnovers and short field, kicking a field goal and scoring a touchdown for an early 10 point lead.
The Pack finally held onto the ball and managed to drive down the field and score, with a 20-yard touchdown pass by Wilson to a junior wide receiver Owen Spencer, cutting Virginia Tech’s lead to three points. The play was set up after the Pack converted on third and 14, when Wilson lofted a ball to wide receiver Jay Smith, who brought it down for a 33-yard gain.
Midway through the second quarter, the Hokies where threatening until redshirt freshman cornerback CJ Wilson forced a fumble on Tech’s Williams, with redshirt junior Audi Augustine recovering. Two plays later, Wilson connected with Spencer once again, with a 20-yard pass, setting up a Josh Czajkowski 45-yard field goal.
The Hokies continued their dominance on the offensive side of the ball, scoring two more touchdowns, both off Ryan Williams runs, pushing the score to 24-10 at half.
Williams continued to dominate, scoring his fourth touchdown right after half time on a 19-yard run, taking the score to 31-10. On the night, Williams rushed the ball 32 times for 120 yards and four total touchdowns.
The Pack offense was shut out in the second half, unable to manage a single point.
State will look to end what many as a disappointing season on a positive note as it looks to beat rival North Carolina next Saturday.
