Women’s basketball coach Kay Yow passed away Saturday morning after a 22-year long battle with cancer. Yow, 66, spent last week at WakeMed Cary Hospital continuing her fight and was able to visit with family, friends and her basketball team before passing. She even kept up with State basketball through WKNC broadcasts.
Yow, who coached the Wolfpack for 34 years, stepped down as head coach in December to focus on treatment. Assistant head coach Stephanie Glance has lead the Pack since then. Yow has been an icon of hope and determination for many throughout her battle with cancer, raising money for research with programs like Hoops for Hope.During her career at N.C. State, Yow won more than 700 games, earned 20 NCAA bids, won four ACC championships and reached the final four in 1998. Her career reached far beyond Raleigh in 1988 when she coached a gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team.
