After meeting with NC State officials earlier Friday, former UNC-Wilmington head coach Kevin Keatts has been hired to coach the NC State men’s basketball team, according to Jeff Goodman with ESPN.
In three seasons with the Seahawks, Keatts garnered a 72-28 overall record to go along with three CAA Conference Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. While both matchups were tightly contested, the Seahawks were eliminated in the round of 64 in each tournament, including a 95-83 loss to Duke in 2016 and a 76-71 loss to Virginia on Thursday.
Last year’s trip to the Big Dance was Wilmington’s first since the 2005-06 season, and the team endured six-straight losing seasons before Keatts was hired in 2014.
Keatts was also an assistant coach for Louisville under Rick Pitino for three seasons, including the Cardinals’ 2013 national championship team.
Keatts will take over an NC State team that fell way short of expectations, tallying a 15-17 (4-14 ACC) record and failed to qualify for either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT. It was the worst season in former head coach Mark Gottfried’s tenure despite a talented recruiting pool, which ultimately led to his dismissal.
