The NC State men’s basketball team denied any rumors regarding the firing of head coach Mark Gottfried. Craig Hammel, the director of athletics communications, emailed Technician the following statement:

“Mark Gottfried remains our head coach, and we are all focused on our next opponent. To suggest we have reached out to any other coach is both incorrect and blatantly irresponsible.”

This statement was in response to ABC 11 sports anchor Mark Armstrong’s report suggesting that Gottfried will be fired at the end of the season. NC State is in the midst of a disappointing season in which it sits 14th in the ACC standings with a 14-12 (3-10 ACC) record.

UPDATE: Gottfried declined to comment on the matter in his media availability Tuesday, but instead talked about the team’s preparation for Wednesday’s game against UNC.
