The seemingly ever-amiable Roy Williams, head basketball coach at UNC, has had a problem with controlling his temper as of late, sparking interest, questions and concerns among the students of UNC.
After last season’s devastating, disastrous, damaging and detrimental loss in the national championship game, it appears as though the once jovial Williams is like a volcano, always ready to explode in anger.
Take the Dec. 17 loss to Kentucky for example. In a particularly rough stretch of the game, Williams took out his frustrations in a rather peculiar way, by throwing his suit jacket at freshman guard Seventh Woods, inciting bewilderment from the crowd.
Samuel Samuelson, a senior studying elitist history and theory, weighed in on the controversial move.
“I think he went off the handle a little bit there,” Samuelson said. “I mean, his jacket was Armani, doesn’t he appreciate the quality?”
As many analysts were quick to point out, the burst brought back ghosts of Roy’s past. In a 2012 game against UAB, the Rams’ big cheese took off his jacket and threw it to the ground after his team gave up an open 3-pointer.
The incidents don’t stop there, however.
In an ACC game against Miami on Jan. 28, Roy displayed his distaste for a technical foul call on his team when he threw a foldable chair … well, kind of. In an awkward chain of events, the Carolina commander-in-chief picked up the chair while yelling at his bench, raised it up, contemplated his decision-making for a second and then forcefully threw it to the ground.
Chancellor Carol Folt has confirmed that Williams has checked into a specialized anger-management rehab center.
“I cannot not deny that head coach Roy Williams may or may not have possibly checked into a mental health facility … maybe,” Folt said.
In the midst of all the concerns for the beloved national runner-up coach, many Carolina students have expressed concern and sympathy.
Cindy Rameses, a sophomore studying paper classes, wishes that the old Roy was back.
“I remember the days before the anger like they were yesterday,” Rameses said. “When we made the Final Four, I saw a video of him dancing into the locker room like a total goofball … I miss that Roy.”
Eem-Bet R. TanU, a graduate student not studying engineering, stated that he is trying to jumpstart a social media trend to bring about awareness surrounding the coach’s recent fall.
“I came up with the hashtag, #MakeRoySmileAgain, to try and develop some national attention to the issue,” TanU said.
With the upcoming basketball game at NC State around the corner, and the recent loss to Duke still fresh in Carolina fans’ minds, many students are worried rehab might not be enough to circumvent the current and impending anger.
Wolfpack freshman point guard Dennis Smith Jr. chimed in on the matter.
“I’m going to make him throw his jacket, glasses, pants, shoes and socks on Wednesday,” Smith said.
As for us students over at UNC, many are simply hoping we can get the old “just one of the boys” Roy back before it’s too late.
