In the Pack’s first tournament appearance since 2009, the NC State men’s soccer team fell to No. 25 Old Dominion in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night, 2-0.
There were good opportunities for the Wolfpack, including a shot on goal in the 31st minute when freshman midfielder David Loera found senior midfielder Julius Duchscherer whose shot went just wide of the post.
Freshman goalie Leon Krapf kept the match scoreless until Old Dominion’s Brandon Perdue scored his seventh goal of the season in the 33rd minute to put the Monarchs up 1-0.
The Pack had more opportunities in the 37th and 40th minutes. Duchscherer was found again in the 37th minute by freshman forward Manny Perez. Duchscherer’s shot went off the crossbar to help the Monarchs keep the lead.
The 40th minute opportunity was a pass from senior defender Caleb Duvernay to junior forward Stephen Elias. Elias’s shot got past the Old Dominion goalie but the Pack was called for offsides which kept the Monarchs’ 1-0 lead over the Pack.
The Monarchs scored an insurance goal in the 72nd minute from junior forward Max Wilschrey, his eighth of the season.
The loss was the Pack’s first regulation loss since Sept. 29 against UNC-Chapel Hill. The Pack finished the season 8-6-4 overall.
With the win, the Monarchs advance to take on Indiana on Sunday.
