The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired forward Marcus Kruger from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2018 fifth-round draft pick, general manager Ron Francis announced Tuesday. Vegas had previously acquired Kruger from the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations before flipping him to Carolina.
“We were determined to bring in experienced players with winning pedigrees and Marcus is another addition who fits that mold,” Francis said in the team’s official release. “He’s a solid, two-way center who has achieved success both in the NHL and internationally.”
Kruger is not known for his scoring prowess, with five goals and 17 points last season, but is a strong defensive center. He was a plus seven last season, and should be a good fit on the Canes’ top-five penalty kill.
Picking up former Blackhawks has become somewhat of an offseason tradition for Francis and the Canes. Kruger is the third they’ve acquired this summer, and second by way of Vegas. The team picked up defensive Trevor van Riemsdyk from the Golden Knights (he was taken from Chicago in the expansion draft) the week of the draft, and goaltender Scott Darling earlier in the summer. In addition, forwards Teuvo Teravainen and Joakim Nordstrom and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck also spent time in the Hawks’ organization.
Kruger also adds to the Canes’ collection of Swedish players, joining Nordstrom, Dahlbeck and forwards Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask. His addition gives the Canes a group of centers that includes him, Rask and Jordan Staal, with one of Derek Ryan, Elias Lindholm or Teuvo Teravainen also likely to play down the middle.
Kruger is signed through 2019 at a $3.083 million cap hit, officially putting the Hurricanes over the salary floor for this season.
