Student Body President Jackie Gonzalez, a fourth-year studying political science, released a statement on Tuesday evening regarding a campus police shooting at Georgia Tech University.
“In light of our ties to Georgia Tech as a peer institution, we would like to take this time to extend our deepest condolences to Scout’s family, friends, and the Pride Alliance at Georgia Tech, which Scout was President of,” Gonzalez said in the statement. “Scout’s death was a great loss to the Georgia Tech community and the greater LGBTQ+ advocacy sphere.”
Scout Schultz, president of Georgia Tech’s Pride Alliance, was killed by Tyler Beck, an officer of the Georgia Tech Police Department, Saturday evening. An investigation is currently ongoing.
In the statement, Gonzalez reaffirmed her support of the LGBTQ+ community on campus, and the statement was signed by Ryan Levine, president of the GLBT Community Alliance; J Hallen, Student Government director of diversity outreach; Alexia Scott, vice president of the GLBT Community Alliance; Dana Schmeltzle, secretary of GLBT Community Alliance and Brandon Coates, community chair of the GLBT Community Alliance.
