Dr. Julie Casani, medical director of Student Health Services, says that three cases have officially been confirmed as norovirus, while approximately 60 other students have exhibited symptoms.
Just days after 50 students reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness in Alexander Hall, Wake County Human Services Department confirmed the presence of norovirus, per a safety notice released Friday morning.
Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. As of Friday, 60 students have exhibited norovirus-like symptoms, and most of the students affected live in Alexander Hall. There are, however, additional cases of students who reported symptoms from other campus locations.
“Any students who are presenting symptoms should remain in their rooms, and on-campus students should contact their RA,” the notice said. “Students experiencing persistent, severe vomiting or diarrhea should go to the Student Health Center, personal health care provider, or emergency healthcare facility. Students who are not sick should go about their normal routines.”
Student Health is currently working with University Housing to contact all identified sick students to check on their health, and wellness kits have been distributed to affected students. University Housekeeping staff have increased cleaning operations in affected areas as a precaution.
