Senior defensive end Bradley Chubb celebrates after a play at the NC State football game against UNC-Chapel Hill in Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday. The Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels, 21-33, claiming their eighth win of the season.
After a spectacular senior season with NC State football, defensive end Bradley Chubb was nationally recognized Monday night. Chubb was named this year’s winner of the Bronko Nagurski Award, which goes to the top defensive player in the country annually, at the Charlotte Convention Center.
A one-man wrecking crew off the edge for NC State, Chubb cemented his status as a likely top-five pick in April’s NFL draft. Chubb led the FBS in tackles for loss with 23.5 this season, adding 10 sacks to lead the ACC, along with 72 total tackles, nine quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and a blocked kick.
After last season, Chubb easily could have been a second-round pick in the NFL, but decided to come back for one more year, a decision that has more than paid off.
“It’s a little surreal moment just knowing the people who won this award in the past, but it’s definitely an honor,” Chubb told media in Charlotte.
Chubb finishes his college career with 25 sacks, beating out 2006 NFL first-overall pick Mario Williams for the all-time school record. He is the first player in school history to win the Nagurski Award. Chubb and the Wolfpack will take on Arizona State in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29.
