With regular season action wrapped up, the men’s soccer team looks to extend its two game winning streak into today’s ACC Tournament. State is coming off of a critical, 2-0 shutout win over the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday. The Wolfpack’s first game will be a rematch against Virginia Tech. “We just want to win,” senior defender Tyler Lassiter said. “I want to leave on the best note possible, winning obviously would be the best note. We can’t lose because then we’ll be out the next game. ” The tournament will be a tall task for the Pack. The squad finished the season with a 1-5-2 record in the conference and enters the tournament as the 8th seed. However, entering the tournament as an underdog and looking to avenge a previous loss to the Hokies, N.C. State doesn’t feel any additional pressure going into the tournament. “We just have to play the games like we play all of them,” coach Dan Popik said. “Obviously we haven’t done that well in ACC games this year, but we approach every game the same, no pressure.” There is also some additional motivation for the Pack going into the opening round game – the winner faces rival North Carolina in the next round. “Of course if we win against Virginia Tech, we’ll have Carolina,” Lassiter said. “We beat them last year in the ACC so that would be nice to win again in my senior year. ” Another hurdle that State must overcome to succeed is the injury to senior defender Lucas Carpenter will keep him sidelined during the ACC Tournament. Carpenter started the first eleven games of the season until he fell to injury in the match against Boston College. “I think the first thing we have to do is we’ve got to be as healthy as possible,” Popik said. “Everybody’s trying to do their best with the bumps and bruises they have. He’s jogging so he’s improving. I think we are running out of time. ” Carpenter has been ruled out for the ACC Tournament, but according to teammates, he will likely be able to return for the NCAA Tournament if the Pack qualifies. “He’s getting better; he’s doing his rehab. He’s making a great recovery,” sophomore defender David Brown said. “I think he’s going to be ready if we make it to the NCAA.” Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
