Everyone has been in classes now for a whole week. Homework is starting to pile up, papers are being typed and already for some students, they want an escape. Luckily, for one night, the students of University Towers and friends are taking a break from homework, studying and reading to enjoy a night full of music, food and foam.
University Towers is throwing their foam party once again, to be held Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. As for what a foam party is, first take your average party — music, dancing and food – then, simply add foam. Thousands and thousands of gallons of foam. The result — instant foam party.
Sounds like one of the “once in a very long while” type of parties. Not for University Towers, according to University Towers resident manager Joseph Payne.
“This is our fourth year that we’ve thrown the foam party,” Payne said. “The foam party has always been really popular with the kids. We always try out new ideas for parties, but sometimes they don’t stick. For example, we used to throw a Casino Night every year for 15 years. But the attendance started dropping and we dropped it.”
To host this party, the managers at University Towers have to rent machines that create all of the foam. They also have to pay for the food that is offered. The bill is surprising not that high, according to Payne.
“This year, we are spending around $1,100 to $1,300 for the foam party. It depends on the food we get,” Payne said. “We have a budget for Resident Life. It covers the apartment events, floor events and others.”
The party so far looks like it will be a big hit this year. The Facebook page for the party as of Monday night had more than 800 people attending. This includes Andrew Jordan, a freshman in business, who lives at University Towers.
“I’ll definitely be there. With clothes, though? Doubt it,” Jordan said.
With that many people attending, there are many possibilities for accidents, fights or other assorted problems that occur at large student events. Luckily, University Towers has it covered.
“We have plans for security. We’ll have four Raleigh police officers, along with three University Towers managers and the 15 RAs for security and running the show,” Payne said.
Not everyone, though, plans to be anywhere near the foam party. John Drummond, a senior in psychology, who lives in University Towers is one student who doesn’t see the point.
“I don’t see the allure of it. It’s a bunch of people playing in foam,” Drummond said.
Katie Beck, a freshman in biology, said she doesn’t mind playing in the foam. But she’s not going alone.
“I’m going to the party. Me and my friends are already planning on going. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Beck said.
