With the winter holidays over, students are moving back into dorms, apartments and houses to begin the new semester in the new decade. With campus dorms opening as early as Friday, some students were left with two and a half days to unpack and get ready for classes — or fewer.
Some students, like Ryan Morgan, a freshman in mechanical engineering, moved back into dorms Saturday to have time to prepare for the new semester.
“I came to settle back in, to make sure I got my books. Just to make sure I’m ready for classes on Monday,” Morgan said.
Students such as Allison Harriett, a sophomore in agriculture and mechanical engineering, utilized the early move-in date for Campout, which happened Saturday night.
“If it wasn’t for Campout, I probably would have come back late Sunday. I normally wait until the last minute to come back to school,” Harriett said.
Stacey Neil, an undeclared freshman, moved back Sunday because she said the stuff she needed to get done, like finding her classes and picking up her books, she was not able to do earlier.
“I had thought about coming back earlier,” Neil said. “I didn’t think anything would be open, so I didn’t see the point of coming back over the weekend.”
Neil, who lives in Becton Hall, said the process went smoothly, though when she came back from lunch, she saw the building’s elevator was not working. Morgan said he and his roommate did not experience any problems at Wood Hall.
“It was really quiet,” Morgan said. “We were the first two back.”
Harriett said she has lacked in sleep because of Campout but she did not want to sleep too much.
“That was an all night thing. I don’t want to get too much sleep today,” Harriett said. “I have classes tomorrow.”
Harriett, who lives in Avent Ferry, said she does not feel completely prepared for the new semester because of the move-in date.
“First semester, we had from Sunday to Wednesday to get in the swing of things,” Harriet said. “Now we have one day to get books and get into the swing of things.”
Neil also said she feels unprepared with one day of preparation.
“I feel like I’m a little bit behind, but I don’t think it will be a problem,” Neil said.
As for adjusting to the difference between home life and dorm life, Neil said it is going to be a little strange.
“You get a little bit of homesickness,” Neil said. “I’m looking forward to the new semester … getting back to the old routine.”
Morgan said he has gotten used to dorm life and remains mostly optimistic about the upcoming semester.
“I believe I am fully prepared for the new semester … hopefully,” Morgan said.
