Christina Koch, an NC State alum, and another astronaut, Anne McClain, were expected to make history on Friday with the first all-female spacewalk. However, McClain was switched out of the walk with a male astronaut due to issues with spacesuit size, thus prolonging an all-female spacewalk for the future.
On March 22, McClain was launched into space to swap old batteries on the International Space Station (ISS), according to NPR. During the mission, McClain realized that the medium-sized spacesuit she wore fit better than the large size she had trained in.
NPR reported that the ISS only had one medium-sized suit ready for use at the moment. Another medium-sized spacesuit exists on the ISS, but is not prepared for a spacewalk.
NASA decided to swap out McClain with astronaut Nick Hague, who does not require a medium suit, instead of taking extra time to prepare the existing suit for McClain, NPR stated.
NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz told the New York Times that completing the mission was ultimately more important.
“When you have the option of just switching the people, the mission becomes more important than a cool milestone,” Schierholz said.
Koch and Hague will complete the spacewalk on March 29 and are scheduled to start at 8:20 a.m, according to NASA. Tune into NASA TV to watch.
