Christina Hammock Koch, an NC State graduate, was launched into space on March 14 to the International Space Station, where she is expected to make history with the first all-female spacewalk next week.
According to News & Observer, NASA chose Koch and seven other people to participate in its astronaut class in 2013. They were chosen out of more than 6,100 applicants.
Since the selection for the astronaut program, Koch has participated in extensive training in preparation for spacewalks, robotics, physiological training and water and wilderness survival training. In addition, Koch learned how to fly a T-38 aircraft, according to WRAL.
Around 3 p.m. on March 14, Koch’s launch to the International Space Station was shown in Riddick Hall. Here, NC State students and faculty celebrated her first flight into space. Among them was Jamila Simpson, interim associate dean of Academic Affairs.
“What a wonderful role model that I’ve had the privilege of meeting twice and little girls all over America are going to see, and actually all over the world,” Simpson said to WRAL.
According to NC State News, Koch hopes to inspire people to go after their passions and couldn’t feel more ready for the launch and what is to come.
The spacewalk is expected to take place on March 29, according to NBC News.
