After a 45-minute delay in revealing Spring Election results, the Board of Elections made the final decision to postpone announcing the results for the student body president and vice president until March 21.
The two tickets running for student body president and vice president are Emma Carter, a candidate for student body president and a third-year studying sociology and international studies, and her running mate Nicole Teague, a candidate for vice president and a third-year studying business administration. In addition, Alex Obiol, a candidate for student body president and a fourth-year studying textile engineering, is running with Lexie Malico, a candidate for vice president, and a Ph.D student studying chemistry.
The Board of Elections made a statement on their decision at the elections reveal Tuesday night.
“After careful consideration, the Board of Elections has decided to postpone the student body president and vice president announcement until March 21, time and location to be announced on the [Student Government] website,” said Samantha Saunders, a member of the Board of Elections. “We have made this decision out of respect to both tickets and to the integrity of the elections process. We as the Board of Elections are committed to ensuring a free and fair elections.”
According to Section III-B of the Board of Elections Handbook, the Board of Elections and current Student Body Officers need to host an official elections results reveal within 24 hours following the close of elections, unless postponed by the board due to unavoidable circumstances.
The board chose not to take questions about this issue.
Jess Errico, current student body president, declined to comment. Obiol and Malico could not comment on this issue.
Carter and Teague responded to the delay of results.
In response, Carter stressed the importance of respecting the integrity of elections while Teague expanded on this ideal.
“We definitely just want to thank the Board of Elections for the work that they’ve done thus far. It’s been outstanding,” Teague said. “They’re great at their jobs. All the way from Chair Lilly Neal all the way down to each and every commissioner … They’re great at their jobs and we respect their decision for wanting to uphold the integrity and their values of having free and fair elections.”
However, the results for student body officers were announced at this time. Below are the results:
Student Senate President: Mitchell Smith Moravec, a graduate student in public administration and the senate president of the 97th session
“Obviously, I was uncontested, so I wasn’t necessarily worried about not being elected,” Moravec said. “But, I am looking forward to correcting some of the mistakes I made the first time, looking at the leadership of Adam and how he also took on the role, just kind of trying it again… trying to do my best as senate president. As Senate president, I am looking forward to obviously, filling…those 17 open senate seats… all of these things do have to happen in the spring before we hit the summer, so getting on track with that stuff.”
Student Body Treasurer: Garrison Seitz, a first-year student studying engineering
“I’m ready to serve the student body the best I can… I am ready, with whoever it might be, to work with the student body officers,” Seitz said. “I am prepared, and it’s going to be a good 99th session.”
Student Body Chief Justice: Kiera Jonson, a fourth year studying microbiology
Jonson was not available for a statement at this time.
