Construction on Dan Allen Drive will not further impact parking or traffic on main campus, and construction is expected to be completed soon.
Cameron Smith, senior director of Capital Project Management, said construction should be completed by the middle of the fall 2019 semester.
The project to expand sewers and storm drains was expected to be completed in late July. The parking lots and main roads are open now, but the pay lot in front of Bragaw Hall bordering Dan Allen Drive will not be open until the fall semester starts, according to the interim assistant director for parking services, Chris Dobek.
“The way this project was scheduled and staged is we reserved spaces in the resident west area in the spring for the construction, and the plans were for the entire spring semester,” Dobek said. “All those spaces will be back online again for the fall permit sales, so there’s no impact on the residential side, and then the pay lot area will be reestablished as a pay-by-plate area by the time school starts.”
The project will also have no impact on the Wolfline routes, Dobek said.
Smith said it is possible construction will interfere with students moving in to Sullivan and Lee residence halls, but also that University Housing has a plan to address this issue. He did not know the plan specifically, but he believes students may be unloading items from Lee parking lot and traffic entering from Sullivan Drive near Dail Park.
Smith also said that the next step will be to install a new stormwater line underneath the railroad track that goes over the Free Expression Tunnel. Because a railway company owns the railroad, the city of Raleigh and Capital Project Management will not be able to add the stormwater line until the fall semester.
“The contractor is ready to go, so as soon as we finish negotiations with the railroad, they’ll be ready to go to get it done,” Smith said.
The updates for the sanitary sewer system and the addition of the stormwater drainage line are a joint effort between NC State and the city of Raleigh. The sanitary sewer system upgrade is for The Standard at Raleigh, a new private off-campus apartment complex on Hillsborough Street, according to Smith.
Smith expects no further road closures to be made and did not say whether the tunnels underneath the railroad will be blocked.
