In the words of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, we have a trade to announce. The Carolina Hurricanes have traded forward Victor Rask to the Minnesota Wild for forward Nino Niederreiter, Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell announced Thursday.
Since returning after being sidelined due to a hand injury suffered while cutting sweet potatoes in the offseason, Rask had just one goal and six points in 26 games for the Hurricanes this season. Niederreiter has nine goals and 23 points in 46 games for Minnesota this year.
“We’re excited to welcome a proven goal-scorer and veteran presence in Nino Niederreiter,” Waddell said in an official release from the Hurricanes. “We wish Victor the best moving forward and thank him for his efforts on the ice and in the community during his time in Raleigh.”
After Rask put up a career-high 21 goals and 48 points during the 2015-16 season, former general manager Ron Francis signed him to a six-year deal worth $4 million per season. Rask had another solid season the next year with 16 goals and 45 points but dipped to 14 and 31 the next year.
No salary was retained in the deal, so the Wild will assume the full three years remaining on Rask’s aforementioned contract. Niederreiter is signed for three more seasons at $5.25 million per season.
Niederreiter has scored 20 or more goals three times during his eight-season career, including a career-high 25 goals and 57 points in 2016-17. He had 18 goals and 32 points in just 63 games last season.
This trade appears to be a large win for Waddell and the Hurricanes, who were in need of another goal-scoring winger, particularly one like Niederreiter, who at 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds can bring a power game as well.
The Canes host the Ottawa Senators at PNC Arena Friday night.
