WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The NC State men’s basketball team picked up its first ACC win of the season Saturday afternoon, beating Wake Forest 91-82 on the road in Winston-Salem. Here are some of the important numbers from Saturday’s game that won’t show up on the average box score.
13 - The number of field goals NC State outshot Wake Forest by. The Wolfpack’s 19 forced turnovers and 12 offensive rebounds helped NC State rack up 13 more shots than the overmatched Demon Deacons.
0 - The number of free throws NC State attempted in the first 33:22 of game time. Despite racking up 36 points in the paint and getting to the rim at will, the Wolfpack couldn’t draw contact and force the referees to blow their whistles.
16 – The number of free throws NC State attempted in the final 6:38 of game time. As Wake Forest desperately fouled to extend the game the last few minutes, NC State went from not drawing a single shooting foul for over 75% of the game to making 16 trips to the line.
41 – The total amount of fouls called Saturday afternoon. In what was a sloppy, tightly-officiated game, both teams were guilty of excessive fouling. NC State was called for an infraction 23 times, while Wake Forest picked up 18 team fouls, many of which came at the end while trying to extend the game.
54.5 – NC State’s shooting percentage from the 3-point line. The Wolfpack was firing away from deep all afternoon, shooting 22 times from beyond the arc and connecting on 12. Minus redshirt junior forward D.J. Funderburk’s 0-for-3 performance from deep, NC State shot over 63%.
36 – The combined amount of turnovers between the two teams in their sloppy performances. Although the final score doesn’t reflect such an ugly game, 19 turnovers by Wake Forest and 17 by the Wolfpack led to 45 total points off of turnovers.
6 – The number of double-digit scorers NC State had. Led by redshirt senior C.J. Bryce’s 18 points, six different Wolfpack players scored at least 10 points, and a seventh, redshirt freshman forward Manny Bates, might have joined the club had he not fouled out with a few minutes to play.
69 – Both teams’ free-throw percentage, as neither could shoot effectively from the charity stripe. Although Wake Forest did a nice job getting there, the Deacs’ nine missed free throws were the difference in what was a nine-point game.
