The men’s tennis team finished its season with a 10-14 record overall while going 2-9 in ACC competition. If I were to grade them purely based on their record, however, I would probably give them a C-. What one needs to understand about tennis, however, is that, even though entire team results are accumulated to determine the winner between two teams, in the end, it’s mostly an individual game. Unlike many sports, if one of your teammates is falling behind in a singles match, there’s really nothing anyone else can do to help them other than yell out encouragement. Having witnessed how close many of the matches have come and the heart put into every point, I cannot honestly give them any lower than a B-. The only skill some of the individuals on this team lack is the maturity to finish what they start. Half of the team is comprised of underclassmen and only two of the upperclassmen are leaving after this season. Every member of this team has the necessary tools and each of them has the technical ability to win every match they begin; as they continue to mature and sharpen these tools, they will become more confident and hopefully reap the benefits.
