NC State women’s golf struggled mightily at the Landfall Tradition, finishing in a tie for 13th, competing against a field that featured many of the same teams it beat last week in Chapel Hill.
Last weekend at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, the Pack had itself a tournament, finishing third but also setting the single-round program scoring record with a combined 275. Star sophomore Marie Eline Madsen came in third, having finished in the top five every tournament, until this week.
“To be able to create any momentum [is crucial], because our sport is playing so many teams at once,” said head coach Darby Sligh after the final round in Chapel Hill. “You have eight [tournaments] to do it.”
In Wilmington, North Carolina, at the Landfall Tradition, the Pack couldn’t replicate that success. All of last week’s top performers saw a big regression, with NC State having no top-25 finishers. All six teams that the Pack beat in Chapel Hill, which were playing in the Landfall, finished ahead of the red-and-white.
Madsen, after having moved up on the national leaderboard to No. 5 in Division I golf, shot 6-over-par to finish in a tie for 35th. Holding her back? A nine-hole stretch in the second round where she shot 6-over.
Senior Vania Simont was the top performer for the Pack, finishing in a tie for 29th at 4-over-par. Simont gave consistent play throughout the tournament, with rounds of 73, 74 and 73.
Freshmen Lindsay McGrath and Ellie Hildreth put a few stellar performances on the board last week, finishing in a tie for 8th and 17th, respectively, but they too could not stay in the red. Both tied the tournament winner, Anna Davis of Auburn, for most birdies last in the Ruth’s Chris with 11. But at the Landfall, they combined for just six birdies, with McGrath posting four and Hildreth posting two. McGrath finished in a tie for 64th, and Hildreth finished in a tie for 70th.
Junior Lea Ludwig finished in a tie for 64th, putting out another result that is below the standard she set for herself last season, posting five top-50 finishes. In the fall portion of the season, she has posted just one top-50 finish — a tie for 22nd at the Iverness Intercollegiate.
Freshman Betsy Sullivan has struggled so far this season, not yet recording a top-50 finish. But playing as an individual — with her scores not counting towards the team — there is less pressure on her to perform, allowing her to develop. At the Landfall, Sullivan finished 82nd.
With the fall portion wrapped up, the Pack will be back in action Jan. 30-31 at the Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club in Guadalajara, Mexico.
