The last time NC State men’s basketball scored 100 points in an ACC road game, Janet Jackson’s “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” had just fallen out of the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and Kurt Cobain had yet to write “Smells like Teen Spirit.” On Saturday, the Wolfpack did it with six minutes to spare in a 113-69 win over Florida State.
NC State (12-5, 3-1 ACC) controlled the boards, disrupted the Seminoles’ (7-9, 0-3 ACC) offensive rhythm and ran a high-speed offense to perfection on its way to complete domination. The Wolfpack outrebounded Florida State 44-25, tied a program record of 19 made threes on 54% 3-point shooting and assisted over half of its made baskets. This was the ‘Red Reckoning’ fans were promised.
Six Wolfpack players brought in double figures: sophomore guard Paul McNeil led the team with 21 points while senior forwards Darrion Williams and Ven-Allen Lubin added 20 and 19 respectively. Highly-touted freshman guard Matt Able tied his career high of 15 points — all from beyond the arc — and redshirt junior guard Terrence Arceneaux scored 13, his highest total in an NC State jersey.
“Our biggest issue is that we have a hard time, once the snowball gets going down the hill, stopping the other team’s runs,” said head coach Will Wade after NC State’s win over Boston College earlier in the week.
Today, it was the Wolfpack’s runs that were unstoppable. NC State blitzed the Seminoles, jumping out to an 11-0 lead and never looking back. The Wolfpack’s 56 first-half points are the most it has scored in a first half under Wade, and the team scored even more than that in the second half.
Florida State leads the conference in 3-point attempts per game, but NC State’s 3-point shooting stole the show. Making seven in a row at one point, the Wolfpack had no trouble creating quality looks against the Seminoles. A banked-in three pointer at the buzzer from freshman forward Musa Sagnia — only his third 3-point attempt of the year — capped off the first half.
On the other end of the floor, NC State was just as dominant, rendering Florida State’s offense powerless by speeding up the game and staying in front of the Seminoles’ guards. Florida State took 12 minutes to reach double figures.
After combining for 44 points against Duke, the Seminoles’ leading scorers Chauncey Wiggins and Robert McCray V were held to 13 points on 5-for-17 shooting. McCray fouled out of the game with 13 minutes left and didn’t miss anything but another 34 points for the Wolfpack.
Senior guard Quadir Copeland, known for talking trash on the court, picked up a technical foul in the first half for doing just that and didn’t see the floor again until the second half. He only played 18 minutes, tying his lowest total for the season.
After taking another win on the road, NC State return home to host Georgia Tech at noon on Saturday, Jan. 17.
