In coach Bo Andrews’ first season at the helm of NC State golf, the team has come close to a first-place finish, but would always fall short.
Entering the final round of the Michael A. Marino Classic, NC State men’s golf narrowly led over Louisville for first place. The team dialed in, hitting 4-under-par on the final round and securing Bo Andrews’ first victory as the Wolfpack’s coach.
NC State was the only team in a field featuring four top-50 teams to hit under par in every round and ended the tournament at 15-under-par. The Wolfpack’s effort was led by sophomores Xander Goboy and Pearce Lewin, who both finished in the top-10.
Lewin — who followed Andrews to Raleigh from Tennessee and has finished no lower than sixth in the spring season — kept rolling with a 7-under-par performance for sixth overall.
Goboy managed even better at 8-under-par for his best performance by stroke in the red-and-white and fourth in the event.
Both players are performing noticeably better than in the fall, and have NC State capable of reaching a different ceiling than earlier in the season.
Redshirt sophomore Rylan Shim — another reason for the Wolfpack’s heightened spring performance — tied for 26th-place at 1-over-par, powered by a four-under round two.
Redshirt senior Markus Varjun of Tallinn, Estonia, found his groove in the third round, hitting 2-under-par. With those holes, he rose 28 spots to finish in a tie for 30th-place.
Rounding out the Pack’s play was senior Joey Lenane. The veteran struggled, shipping in his worst performance of the season at 7-over-par for a 52nd-place tie. Although he didn’t bring his best, he played well enough to get NC State the victory.
Next up for the Pack is the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee from Friday, April 3 to Sunday, April 5.
