To the Editor,
College is overwhelming, and after my past four years at NCSU there is not much I would say I did not experience. I want to state that I appreciate that The Technician makes space for articles that address real, everyday issues many college women face. Specifically, in the Opinion column when you address self-care, friendships, dating, eating disorders and mental health. These pieces stand out because they acknowledge that academic success does not exist by itself — our emotional well-being and relationships are just as important. Reading articles that reflect these shared experiences makes students feel seen and understood, especially during times where I am convinced that I am the first person to ever experience a situation.
As a reader, I would love to see The Technician continue and even expand this type of content through more opinion-based and personal writing. Podcasts like Call Her Daddy are popular because they feel honest, relatable and conversational. Wendy Williams’s celebrity gossip was humorous, engaging and, in many ways, freeing compared to the rigid formality of traditional news. While those platforms are entertaining, our campus newspaper can take on similar topics and discussions about the specific cultures and pressures of our university. Hearing meaningful conversations that allow readers like me to not feel alone really means a lot.
I hope that The Technician writers continue to build on prioritizing relatable, thoughtful pieces that speak directly to student life beyond the classroom. I think you all have already created a space that feels inclusive and reflective but could also grow into something a little more personal and fun. Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Alaina Butera
