On April 1 something horrible happened in our country. I’m glad, though, that so many news sources informed the public about it, as it’s an event that will truly go down in history. It was horrible, but I’m glad people in the future will be able to learn from it moving forward.
The victim, Miley Cyrus, reported the event firsthand.
“I don’t wanna say it because I don’t want it to be real… But my precious baby Floyd has passed away,” Cyrus tweeted. “I know I don’t mean it but I wish he would have taken me with him this is unbearable. What am I gonna do without him? I am miserable.”
On April 1, Floyd died. Only four days later, April 5, Cyrus broke down into tears during her concert in Brooklyn, while singing to a large, blow-up version of him that accompanied her on stage.
I would sympathize more with her if she were tweeting about and had lost an actual baby named Floyd, but no, that is her dog’s name.
Of course it’s horrible when dogs die, but the death of a celebrity’s dog shouldn’t receive so much press.
People’s dogs die every day, and even more important than that, people die every day. Horrible causes take people’s lives every minute, but no, let’s all mourn with Cyrus over her dog’s death.
I find it a bit annoying how bad people are feeling for her. I may sound bitter, but it’s just ridiculous how much she is getting pitied.
One news source reported the death of Cyrus’ dog as follows:
“Miley Cyrus has been devastated since her beloved pup, Floyd tragically passed away on April 1. The singer paid tribute to her beloved dog at her April 5 concert by having a giant replica join her on stage for a heartfelt and emotional performance. Watch Miley’s tribute to Floyd below.”
You may think that this is an excerpt from a publication such as The Onion but no, this is a real report of a pop star losing her dog. Using words such as “devastated,” “tragically,” “heartfelt,” “emotional” and “tribute” make it seem all too sentimental.
The story doesn’t end there, though.
Her mom surprised her with a new dog named Moonie, so naturally, the developing saga continues to show up in the news. There is an article in The Los Angeles Times headlined, “Miley Cyrus still mourning dog Floyd, ‘torn’ about new pup Moonie.” The “torn” quote refers to a heart-wrenching tweet by Cyrus almost a week after Floyd’s death.
“I wanna go home. But I don’t wanna go home to a home with no Floyd. 5 am. Can’t sleep. Playing Barclays tomorrow. guide me rainbow Floyd,” Cyrus tweeted. “So torn. I love having little Moonie cuddle w me and Mary Jane but just don’t know if I’m ready to love again.”
So to recap, news sources such as New York Daily News, USA TODAY, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times all published articles about a celebrity mourning her dog’s death. It’s ridiculous.
I understand that by writing about this, the subject receives even more press, but the fact that a dog’s death receives more attention than hard-hitting news is a problem that needs to be addressed.
