Class of 2008SF C.J. WilliamsJack Britt High School (Fayetteville, NC)/ CP3 All-Stars (AAU)Profile: Williams sizes up as a shooting guard at 6-4, but shows the ability to guard in the post as well. His main gift is his defense, as he rarely takes plays off and is a force to be reckoned with. Though he shows smarts and a decent shooting stroke, he lacks the ability to take a game over offensively, particularly at the college level.Player rating: CInterest: Committed
SG Julius MaysMarion High School (Marion, IN)/ Indiana Elite Stars (AAU)Profile: I missed out on a chance to catch Mays in action, but he is considered one of the top players in Indiana’s senior class. He has the ability to play point guard, which could earn him some immediate playing time with the Wolfpack. He’s best known for his ability to penetrate and get into the lane. Look for Williams to play some immediately and to emerge more as a role player down the road when State has more offensive weapons to work with.Player Rating: C+Interest: Committed
Class of 2009C Derrick FavorsSouth Atlanta HS (Atlanta, GA)/ Atlanta Celtics (AAU)Profile: Favors is the No. 1 player in the class of 2009 according to Scout.com and after watching him play at the Tournament of Champions, it makes sense. He has a big body with a springy ability to finish around the rim, similar to J.J. Hickson, but with less girth and more length. He’s a true impact player on both ends of the floor and is used to winning. However, many scouts believe it’s going to be hard to get him away from his home state and most predict him to go to either Georgia or Georgia Tech. Still, Favors said both Sidney Lowe and Larry Harris have recruited him heavily, and he is interested in the Pack.Player Rating: AInterest: Med-High
PG John WallWord of God Christian Academy (Raleigh)/ D-One Sports (AAU)Profile: Wall is the top point guard prospect in the class of 2009 and pretty much has his way on the court with anyone unfortunate enough to guard him. He’s lightning quick and tall for a point guard at six feet three inches. His shot could use improvement, but his ability to get to the rim, finish with contact and pass on the run is unmatched among point guards. State is going after Wall aggressively, and he would be a prized recruit, but many feel it’s going to be hard to snag him away from other high-profile programs such as Memphis and Kentucky. In his words: “A lot of people say I should go [to N.C. State] because it’s right [near] home, and my parents could come. But, like, I told them, I just can’t make that decision just because it’s close to home, even though I wouldn’t mind being close to home. If there are schools out-of-state that are better for me, then that’s where I’m going to go.” His list of schools is long and he doesn’t seem to be in any rush to make a decision quickly. State’s best chance is that Wall sees himself as a one-and-done type player and doesn’t feel like leaving home before going to the league.Player Rating: AInterest: Medium
SG Lorenzo BrownCentennial HS (Roswell, GA)/ World Wide Renegade Black (AAU)Profile: Many feel N.C. State is at the top of Brown’s list right now, and the sooner he makes a decision, the more it could influence other big-time prospects to follow in his footsteps. Ranked the No. 5 shooting guard nationally by Scout.com, Brown is simply a solid player. He’s a natural shooting guard with the intelligence, handles and work ethic to run the point. Brown is an AAU teammate of C.J. Leslie, who has verbally committed to State for the 2010 season and said he has been trying hard to push N.C. State to his talented teammates. “I like coach Lowe a lot,” Brown said. “I know they want me bad. I talk to J.J. [Hickson] about the school… he said he likes it here.”Player Rating: B+Interest: High
SG Scott WoodMarion HS (Marion, IN)Profile: Wood is a teammate of 2008 commit Julius Mays, so the coaching staff obviously liked the chemistry the duo has together on the court. From my understanding, Mays is more of a physical combo guard and Wood is a pure shooter who complements him well. If State lands Lorenzo Brown in this class, the possibility exists that the Pack will focus less of its attention on John Wall and start looking into a deep 2010 class for point guards.Player Rating: CInterest: Verbal Commitment
Class of 2010PF C.J. LeslieWord of God HS (Raleigh, NC)/ Worldwide Renegade BlackProfile: The first thought when watching C.J. Leslie play is “He can’t get here soon enough.” With two years of high school left, Leslie is 6-7 and athletic with an ability to shoot midrange, an explosiveness at the rim, and decent handles. Equally impressive is his defensive presence — he recorded 13 blocks in one game we watched at the Tournament of Champions. He sometimes loses his head and takes plays off, but his natural ability has secured him a spot as one of the top-15 overall players in the class of 2010. The best thing he’s doing for State right now is recruiting his fellow teammates — Brown and Wall. “I’m on the job,” Leslie said of his recruiting efforts.Player Rating: A-Interest: Verbal Commitment
