Sigma Pi organized Skate for Sam, an event to raise money for the Sam Spady Foundation and awareness about alcohol poisoning, at Garner Ice House on Saturday. The fraternity raised $300 more than their $1,000 goal.
The Sam Spady Foundation honors the memory of Samantha Spady, a 19-year-old student at Colorado State University, who died of alcohol poisoning Sept. 5, 2004.
“Greek Life is trying to get more involved with the campus and the community and participate in more philanthropy activities,” Fred Duyck, philanthropy chair of Sigma Pi, said.
Skate for Sam is Sigma Pi’s yearly Altruistic Campus Experience project but this is the first year they’ve done ice skating.
The fraternity held a raffle for prizes and donated 50 percent of the admission toward the foundation to help raise awareness through cards and various other outlets, including a DVD to use at events.
“The message is real simple,” said Mark Briscoe, executive director of Sigma Pi and member of the Board of Directors for the foundation. “It’s not an anti-drinking campaign. It’s to increase awareness and prevent alcohol poisoning.”
Members from other fraternities and sororities attended the event, including Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Zeta, Phi Gamma Delta, Lamda Pi Chi and Delta Gamma.
“I’m really surprised at all the support we got from the community and Greek Life,” Ryan Kirkendall, Sigma Pi president, said.
