Whether you are looking for a cheap, quick burger or a gourmet one, there’s something for everyone.
1. Melvin’s
For this Hillsborough Street eatery, the N.C. State decorations and the kind, very fast service make this hamburger joint an excellent place to grab a quick burger for lunch before class.
Matt Lunn, a senior in marine and coastal resources, said he could describe Melvin’s in “two words: cheap and good.”
No need for lettuce and tomato, Melvin’s has the perfect fixins for its tasty burgers: slaw, onions, chili, cheese, ketchup and mustard.
“The slaw is better at Melvin’s,” Allison Goff, a junior in communication, said.
Its deal: The Wolfpack Combo: $2.99 hamburger, fries and a drink

2. Char-Grill
Char-Grill is a Raleigh original and brings you back to the days of the drive-in. It offers 3 oz. and 6 oz. burgers, 1/2 lb. hamburger steaks and a 1/4 lb. hamburger steak jr.
“I just love it! My dad went there as a student and now I do too,” Katherine Wood, a freshman in textile technology, said.
And a meal is not complete without a creamy milkshake or an apple turnover, a Char-Grill specialty.
Its deal: You’ll only spend about $6.

3. Cook Out
Cook Out is a popular place for college students to get a burger. It is open late and offers an inexpensive tray option.
“At Cook Out, you go for a burger, but you know you’re going to end up with two sides and a milkshake,” Goff said.
Cook Out’s burgers can have an assortment of toppings, but one student, Irene Koulianos, a junior in political science, said the best part is the cooked-out-on-the-grill flavor.
“The burgers taste like a real grilled burger,” Koulianos said.
Its deal: $3.99 hamburger, two sides and a drink. Add 80 cents if you want a milkshake

4. MoJoe’s Burger Joint
A list of great hamburgers is not complete without MoJoe’s hamburger joint. MoJoe’s has a great atmosphere and is a fun place to hang out with friends.
“They have big, fat, juicy burgers that are delicious and it has a really fun atmosphere … it’s definitely one of my favorites,” John Chiulli, a junior in mechanical engineering, said.
It features a 1-pound burger with an array of toppings: lettuce, tomato, all kinds of cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms and pickles.
“MoJoe’s has that one-pound hamburger that you can eat and get your picture on the wall; mine used to be up there … I guess I need to go back,” Chiulli said.
Its deal: The one-pounder is a little more expensive, about $7 or $8.

5. Cloo’s Coney Island
Cloo’s is a tiny eatery in Mission Valley that you might not have ever noticed.
“For a quick and cheap burger, I like Coney Island,” Lindsay Barfield, a senior in English, said.
This hole-in-the-wall joint has burgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill when you order them. The burgers are so big, they barely fit in the buns. Cloo’s is perfect for a juicy, fast dinner that will fill you up.
“They have the best fries and the biggest burgers,” Chiulli said.
Its deal: You’ll spend about $5 or $6, but you will be stuffed afterward.

6. Papa Lou’s
Papa Lou’s has 5 oz. hand-formed grilled burgers. To go with them: french fries or onion rings. It has quick service and plenty of seating available. Papa Lou’s also has creamy milkshakes that you can customize with candy add-ins.
Its deal: $3 or $4 plus the fries and beverage

7. Red Robin — America’s gourmet burgers and spirits
For a specialty, gourmet burger, Red Robin has more than enough options. It features “classics” like the Bleu Ribbon Burger and the Banzai Burger with grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce or the “Knife and Forkers” featuring Burger Parmigiana and the Pot Roast Burger. And for burgers without beef, it has “Chicken Burgers” and “Burgerless Burgers” for vegetarians and fish lovers.
Red Robin is a sit-down restaurant, but it is good for a tasty meal that is more than just a burger.
Its deal: $8 – 10 (they are gourmet)

8. Hardee’s
Hardee’s is “Home of the Thickburger.” It is your typical fast food place, offering one giant hamburger.
Its deal: Present your student ID before ordering and get a free fry and drink with the purchase of a Thickburger.
Location: 2304 Gorman St., 5639 Hillsborough St.
9. Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries
“Five Guys is my favorite because the burgers are huge and you can get anything you want on them,” Morgan Welch, a junior in communication, said.
Five Guys offers a chilled, laid-back atmosphere with barrels of peanuts all over the place. You can get your burger topped with fried onions and sauteed mushrooms or any of the other typical burger toppings.
Its french fries, both “Five Guys style” and Cajun, come in a “huge overflowing cup and they taste amazing,” Welch said.
Its deal: $3 to $5.

10. Carolina Ale House
The Ale House features a variety of burger flavors including the Sweet Mountain BBQ cheeseburger and turkey burgers. It also has one called the Sailor Swiss with grilled onions, thousand island dressing and melted swiss cheese.
“I like [Carolina Ale House] because they put time into their burgers,” Brian Clark, a junior in physics, said.
Its deal: $7 to $8.
