Wednesday, May 16Jerusalem, Israel
I arrived in Israel on Monday night at 8:30 p.m. local time, 1:30 in the afternoon in the United States, after spending six hours in Amsterdam. When I arrived at Jerusalem University College I was amazed at the sight of the campus.
On Tuesday we began with our classroom instruction and trips into the Old City of Jerusalem. We had a chance to go and see the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.
The best part for me was the Holy Church of the Sepulcher. This is the site where Jesus was said to be crucified, anointed and buried. I came back to this site later in the evening when there were less people and when I could have more personal time.
Today, Wednesday, is the national celebration called Jerusalem Day, which is when the Jewish people gained back control of Jerusalem from the Arabs. Thisis one of the biggest celebrations in the country, much like our Fourth of July. The streets of the Old City were crowed with people as they were all making their way to the Western Wall for prayers, but as they were walking they were chanting, singing songs and playing games.
Some friends that I have met here and I went this evening to the Western Wall and joined the parade. This was something that I will never forget, it was an experience that will stay in my heart until I die. While we were making our way throughout the Old City, we had the chance to talk to people and find out what their thoughts were on various issues as well as gain insight into what was going on around us. The Israelis were very kind.
Tomorrow we go on a New Testament walk, which should be exciting. Thus far I have taken over 125 pictures and made 4 movies since I left America on Sunday.
Enjoy the summer and I look forward to sharing with you again soon.
Shalom,
Matt
