Since 1999, N.C. State has posted a record of 7-3 in season-opening games.
The Wolfpack went on a 6-0 winning streak before losing to Virginia Tech in 2005 but would rebound with a win against Appalachian State at home in 2006. Six of the seven wins came under the tutelage of former head coach Chuck Amato. Amato went 6-1 in season openers before he was fired in 2006. The Pack has yet to win an opener in the Tom O’Brien era, with a loss against Central Florida in 2007 and last year’s loss at South Carolina.
