NC State football has filled the final vacancy on its coaching staff by hiring former West Virginia assistant Tony Gibson as a co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, head coach Dave Doeren announced Sunday.
Gibson spent the past three seasons at West Virginia as an associate head coach, the past five as a defensive coordinator and also served as the Mountaineers’ linebackers and safeties coach going back to 2013.
“I would like to thank Coach Dave Doeren and the administration at North Carolina State University for giving me the opportunity to join this great coaching staff,” Gibson said in an official release from NC State athletics. “I have admired the accomplishments that Coach Doeren and his staff have achieved in the ACC as well as the rich tradition of NC State for years and I am truly excited to be a part of the mission of bringing a championship to Raleigh.”
Gibson has also spent time at Arizona, Pittsburgh and Michigan in his coaching career. He has coached 25 all-conference players, five All-Americans and 21 players who went on to play in the NFL.
One of his best seasons came in 2016, when Athlon named him the Big 12 Defensive Coordinator of the Year and West Virginia’s defense led the Big 12 in scoring defense and total defense.
“I’m excited that Tony Gibson will now be a part of our program,” Doeren said. “He brings a wealth of experience as a defensive backs coach, a defensive coordinator and as a strong recruiter and mentor. He’s known for getting his players to play hard and has a great reputation not only with his former players but with the high schools where he’s recruited.”
Gibson’s hiring caps off a busy offseason of coaching turnover for the Wolfpack. He replaces Ted Roof, who left to take a defensive coordinator job on former NC State offensive coordinator Eliah Drinkwitz’s staff at Appalachian State.
