NIH Grant powers new insights into organ formation

The National Institutes of Health awarded NC State professor Nanette Nascone-Yoder a $2.8 million grant to investigate how cellular behaviors and forces drive left-right asymmetry in organ development, using the stomach as a model. Partnering with physicist Julio Belmonte, the team will integrate biology and computational modeling to advance understanding of birth defects and broader organ formation.

Starting in fall 2025, NC State will implement new enrollment policies including extended drop and add deadlines with a formal undergraduate leave of absence option, aimed at supporting student well-being. The changes, based on recommendations from the student mental health task force, are designed to give students more flexibility and reduce stress around academic decisions.
