A weekend road trip for the NC State volleyball netted a pair of wins as it dominated Syracuse 3-1 after taking out Boston College in its previous match.
Following up on a 20-kill game in the win over Boston College, senior outside hitter Courtney Bryant led the Wolfpack (13-13, 6-10 ACC) with 16 kills in a 3-1 win over the Orange (13-13, 5-11 ACC). Her attacking efforts were supported by 10 kills from junior outside hitter Clara Vondran and nine kills from freshman opposite hitter Jordan Smith.
Syracuse entered the game having lost six in a row, and NC State offered an opportunity to break that streak in a home game against a team that had only won three times away from Reynolds Coliseum.
The teams started a competitive match by trading 25-20 set wins, each taking a turn outmatching its opponents defense. The third set was a narrow 26-24 win for the Wolfpack, who then took control in the fourth set to bring home the win.
In Syracuse’s last game, Gabriella McLaughlin led the Orange with 21 kills. Today, she was slowed, but not stopped, as she tallied 16 kills. Syracuse was also aided by an impressive performance from Sydnie Waller, who posted 15 kills on a 0.538 hitting percentage.
It was an attack error from McLaughlin that handed the Wolfpack the crucial third set. NC State found itself down 20-13 and rallied back to a winning position with kills from four different members of the Pack.
Breakout freshman outside hitter Rebecca Ring was stymied, as she was held to a 3.6% hitting percentage for seven kills, her lowest total since a 3-0 loss to SMU on Oct. 26t.
Still, the Wolfpack had a balanced and consistent attack through four sets and earned its sixth conference win. Although an at-large or automatic NCAA tournament bid is out of consideration, there are four games left on the schedule to make the best of.
The Wolfpack plays next Friday, November 21st in Charlottesville against a Virginia squad that is bottom-three in the conference. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
