No. 9 NC State women’s tennis added a solid win to the resume at the ITA Indoor Championships in Chicago, Illinois, defeating No. 8 Oklahoma State — but it was all downhill from there as competition steepened.
The Wolfpack (6-3) is just nine matches into the season, and it has already faced five ranked teams — four of which are in the top 10. Looking like a real contender, the Pack rallied to take down a very solid Oklahoma State (3-3) squad 4-3, as former No. 2 recruit, freshman Victoria Osuigwe, won two straight 7-6 tie-breaks to hoist the Pack ahead. But soon, NC State was overwhelmed by the firepower from No. 4 Auburn (13-0) and No. 5 LSU (7-1), who won 4-1, 4-2, respectively.
Oklahoma State
Advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Championships, the Pack came back from a 3-1 deficit against the Cowgirls. The red-and-white dropped the doubles point as the No. 2 pairing in junior Gabriella Broadfoot and Osuigwe fell to Oklahoma State’s pairing of Rose Marie Nijkamp and Anastasiya Komar 6-2, creating a lot of ground to make up. Making matters worse, the No. 16 pairing of junior Jasmine Conway and senior Anna Zyryanova fell 6-3 to put the Pack behind 1-0.
In the singles, the Pack was down after a quick loss on Court 1 from No. 43 Broadfoot 6-1, 6-2 to 2025 Big 12 Player of the Year Olivia Lincer. Soon enough, No. 18 freshman Lavinia Tanasie, who had climbed 20 spots in the recent ITA rankings update, fell 6-2, 6-2 to No. 68 Lucia Peyre, and the Pack was on the verge of defeat.
But a clutch win from Conway, who won on Court 6 in straight sets, brought NC State its first point as she defeated Marcela Lopez. Then, No. 110 Zyryanova picked up a massive win versus No. 19 Nijkamp in straight sets after a first-set tie-break. No. 36 sophomore Mia Slama was next as she took down Komar in three sets after dropping the second-set tie-break.
Finally, finishing off an intense match on Court 5, the IMG Academy grad Osuigwe took down Luca Udvardy to ice the match.
Auburn
The Pack did not fare so well against the Tigers, who are one of the few remaining undefeated Power Four squads. Broadfoot and Osuigwe got back on track with a 6-0 win in their doubles matchup, but the other two squads fell to unranked pairings to give Auburn an early 1-0 lead.
With early straight-set losses by Conway and Slama to No. 31 Ava Esposito and No. 58 DJ Bennett, respectively, the Pack was quickly down 3-0. On Court 5, Tanasie picked up a solid win against fellow Romanian Eva Ionescu 6-3, 6-3 to get NC State on the board, but the Pack’s hopes dwindled as Osuigwe fell to No. 30 Ashton Bowers.
LSU
Getting another opportunity against a top-10 squad, the Pack fell short against LSU 4-2. NC State was a slim margin from winning the doubles point as Conway and Zyryanova quickly took down Addison Lanton and Kina Graham 6-2. But soon, LSU’s No. 81 Alexia Marginean and Carolina Kuhl defeated Slama and Tanasie 6-3, and it would all come down to Court 1.
Dropping their second doubles set of three at the ITA Indoor Championship, reigning NCAA Doubles Champions Broadfoot and Osuigwe fell to LSU’s Kayla Cross and Ella McDonald in an intense 14-point tie-break to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
The Pack fought back as Tanasie and Conway picked up solid wins, with the latter taking down No.92 Kinaa Graham in three sets. But struggles from Broadfoot continued as she fell to LSU’s Cadence Brace to seal the win for the Tigers.
The Pack does not get a break from tough competition as next, it heads to Columbus, Ohio, to face No. 10 Ohio State. The match will take place Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. Then on Sunday, it will face No. 13 Michigan at noon.
