NC State men’s golf took to the three-day Loyola Intercollegiate tournament, looking to start coach Bo Andrews’ first spring term strong, and did just that.
The team placed fourth out of 20, shooting six under par during the first day and nine under during the second and third.. Strong outings from newer members of the Wolfpack led the way on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Pearce Lewin, who followed Andrews from Tennessee to Raleigh last year, led the way for NC State with a score of 10-under par. His tie for sixth is his best finish as a member of the Wolfpack.
Redshirt senior Markus Varjun finished with a score of 8-under par for a tie in 14th-place. That is his best finish as a member of the Wolfpack too.
Sophomore Xander Goboy scored even on day one before working his way up to a tie for 25th-place. One spot ahead of him was senior Evan Woosley-Reed, who was competing as an individual.
Reed was joined in individual competition by redshirt sophomore Rylan Shim, who scored 12-under par and placed third in the competition. If his scores had counted towards the team total, the Pack would have been contending for first.
Shim, the newest member of the Wolfpack, transferred to NC State in December and has already made his mark with the program with the highest finish of his career. Before playing for NC State, he spent two seasons at the University of Florida, playing in seven tournaments after redshirting his first year.
Senior Joey Lenane, a usual anchor for the team, scored 2-under par for a tie in 30th-place. Sophomore Hunter Stetson rounded out NC State’s efforts, placing in a tie for 57th.
The Richmond Spiders took home first place in the competition with a 34-under par performance, the best in the program’s history.
Richmond also won last year’s Loyola Intercollegiate. The competition is held at the Palm Valley Golf Course, designed by course architect Arthur Hills and built in 1993.
Next up, the Wolfpack will play in The Johnnie-O, held at Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, Georgia Mar. 9-10.
