Scoring 12 runs in the first two innings on the way to a 14-2 win over Elon, NC State softball extended its win streak to 11 games.
After the Pack (14-7) smacked a few early runs, freshman designated player Morgen Talley broke the game open in the first inning with a three-RBI home run — her third of the year — to put the Pack up 6-0. But she wasn’t done yet. Up to the plate with two runners on once again in the second inning, she hit another bomb to extend the lead further against Elon (4-15), leading the Pack to victory.
Talley went on to record another hit, going 3-for-3 on the day after adding a double to the scoresheet in the third inning. It’s rare to see a freshman smack homers in back-to-back plate appearances as Talley did, but she wasn’t the first to do it this season for NC State. Freshman third baseman Lily Livingston also accomplished that feat with two-straight homers versus Providence on Feb. 20.
Livingston also looked solid versus Elon, going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Livingston, Talley and freshman shortstop Carly Short — who is currently hitting .355 — make up a solid freshman core. Alongside the freshmen are sophomores second baseman Kendall Simmers and first baseman Taryn Massey, who contribute to a blooming young group of underclassmen. That group has been a big part of the Pack’s 11-game win streak, and in this game went a combined 7-for-11 from the batter’s box
In the circle, senior Rylee Wyman threw three innings, giving up five hits but just one run. Graduate Charli Orsini went into the game in the fourth, giving up a single run, but kept the Phoenix at bay as the Pack held such a large lead. Redshirt sophomore Kayla Fekel cleaned things up in the fifth, walking a batter but closing out the game en route to a run-rule.
The Pack won just three of its first 10 games to open the season as it faced a number of top-tier teams. Facing weaker competition in recent weeks, the Pack has grown into its own and has begun to develop an identity.
The Pack’s 11-game winning streak will get put to the test again Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. as NC State takes on Michigan State.
