After falling to Lafayette on Friday and evening the series on Saturday, No.13 NC State broke the tie in a 14-4 run-rule win over the Leopards on Sunday.
The Wolfpack (14-2) started off slow offensively, recording only two hits in the first two innings and entering the third tied 0-0. Junior left-handed pitcher Cooper Consiglio kept the red-and-white in the game by recording three strikeouts and only conceding a hit to Lafayette (1-9) in that time frame.
However, a Wolfpack error and a walk loaded the bases in the top of the third. Lafayette’s Matt Colella then singled to left field as the Leopards opened the scoring with the first run of the game.
As momentum seemed to shift away from the red-and-white, redshirt freshman catcher Preston Bonn hit a 404 feet home run to left field for the very first hit of his collegiate career to bring the Wolfpack back in the game.
“It felt good obviously, once you get the first hit the nerves go away, and I was just going out there and being myself,” Bonn said.
NC State rode its momentum and ended the inning leading 2-1, as freshman outfielder Rett Johnson added to the scoring tally for the Wolfpack. The red-and-white did not look back and recorded multiple runs in every following inning.
As they entered the bottom of the seventh up 13-4, sophomore infielder Brandon Novy hit a 440-foot home run to put the Wolfpack up by 10, ending the game via run-rule.
Consiglio and Bonn’s performances helped the Wolfpack clinch the tie-breaking win of their three-game series against the Leopards.
“I thought Cooper pitched outstanding today and I felt like Bonn caught really, really good,” said head coach Elliot Avent. “Obviously I know he had a good day offensively but he caught really, really good and that’s what a catcher’s job is”.
The Pack’s next outing will be on Tuesday, March 10, as it hosts Elon (7-7). First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
