Either NC State women’s basketball or the Tennessee Lady Volunteers will end its season against the same opponent it faced to open the season.
Matching up in the Ann Arbor Regional, No. 7 seed NC State (20-10, 13-5 ACC) and No. 10 seed Tennessee (16-13, 8-8 SEC) are set to play in a rematch of their season-opening game. In that game, sophomore guard Zam Jones had a breakout performance, scoring nine of the Pack’s last 11 points to beat the Volunteers 80-77.
When these teams first faced off, they were ranked No. 8 and No. 9 in the country. That’s a far cry from where the teams now stand, with the Wolfpack failing to beat the ACC’s biggest dogs and the Volunteers losing seven straight to end the season. Despite those losses, Tennessee’s Talaysia Cooper has put on some phenomenal performances. The matchup between her and the Wolfpack’s own tandem of junior guard Zoe Brooks and Jones should entertain — Cooper had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists in the season opener.
If the Pack gets past the Volunteers, NC State would likely face No. 2 seed Michigan (25-6), who are hosting the first-weekend games. The Wolverines are currently No. 9 in the AP poll and finished third in the Big Ten. Although they were abruptly stopped by Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament, they have one of the best backcourts in the country. The three-headed hydra of Olson, Swords and Holloway average over 45 points a game.
After getting a bye to the third round of the ACC Tournament, the Pack struggled mightily against Notre Dame, losing 81-63. With that loss, and others late in the season, NC State is 6-4 in its last 10 games. But it’s shown flashes of greatness, with wins over five other teams in the March Madness field. Time will tell if the Wolfpack can put it together for another one of the tournament runs head coach Wes Moore has been known to produce.
Slated for March 20, the Pack will face the Volunteers for a spot in the Round of 32 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the Crisler Center. Time TBA.
