Now that the spring semester has concluded, the wait for a break after weeks of cramming to prepare for final exams is finally over. Gone are the days of projects and exams replaced now by spending time with friends and family free of academic stress.
While you are enjoying your much-deserved summer break, you may want to listen to some music. Whether you are having fun at the beach, partying or maybe just chilling out at home, there is always something to listen to. As we move into the warmer months of the year, here are five songs that are sure to heat up your playlist this summer.
- Kool & The Gang: “Summer Madness” (Instrumental) – 1974
Now I understand that this is a pretty old song. However, I think that this should be the official kickoff song to summer break. With its calm and peaceful beats so good, it just makes you want to close your eyes and say, “Finally, it’s over.”
It’s one of my favorite tunes to listen to after a hard day’s work, and I highly recommend listening to it at least once to understand what I mean. You may even recognize this song in a 2006 Nike “Swimming Pool” commercial featuring NBA star, LeBron James.
- Bruno Mars: “I Just Might” – 2026
If you are looking for something to bop your head to at the skating rink, or in your room where no one can see, look no further than this track. It’s fun, 1970s-esque style just makes you want to dance like there’s no tomorrow.
When the song made its debut, it ended up climbing to number one on the Billboard Top 100 in its first two weeks. This makes it the 10th time that Mars has made a single like this, and the first time to start off in that position.
- Olivia Rodrigo: “Drop Dead” – 2026
Olivia Rodrigo once again has made another hit with this track. Despite its “surprising” title, the song is actually about finding a crush, and becoming lovesick over them.
The song became so popular so quickly that it led to Rodrigo becoming the first artist to ever debut lead singles from her first three albums: “Drivers License,” “Vampire” and “Drop Dead” at number one on the Billboard Top 100.
- Luke Combs: “Be By You” – 2026
This warm-hearted country song is about the writer, who wants to spend every day with a loved one by their side. This song is definitely something to listen to with that special someone in your life. Hopefully, now that it’s summer, you can spend as much time with that person as you like.
One thing that makes this song very touching, is that Luke Combs released it as a dedication to his wife, Nicole Combs.
- Akon: “We Don’t Care” – 2009
To conclude this list, I wanted to end on a high note with a song by a legend in the music industry. This song in particular is about self-acceptance and motivation when you just want to enjoy yourself, while also ignoring the haters. It’s a message that I definitely think fits the summer style, what people think about you shouldn’t matter, the only thing that matters is whether or not you are having fun.
At the end of the day, it’s important to keep your ears open for more tracks. Who knows, you could make a personal playlist that you could jam out to all summer long.
