With the onset of another spring semester, members of the Greek community began a series of meetings on Friday to plan the annual Greek Week.
Greek Week is a seven-day celebration of the Greek community and is an effort to unite all members as one large group.
Planning for this year’s festivities has already begun as leaders in the Greek community campus met Friday afternoon to discuss the week-long celebration taking place later this spring.
Greek Week Chair Kelly Schwartz expects this year’s Greek Week to be a success and hopes to improve upon last year’s event.
“I would like the whole week to be more laid back and enjoyable for everyone,” Schwartz said.
Friday’s meeting was the first of the semester to begin planning for the spring events.
Members with some form of office or leadership position from the four councils that make up the Greek community gathered to discuss what dates would work best and what plans they could start to formulate.
Although the group plans to schedule the celebration for sometime in mid-April, the date is still tentative.
The lack of exact dates and times made it difficult for members of the committee to plan the week, but they did throw around ideas as to who will be the speaker, how to advertise and the form of philanthropy they intend to do.
The Department of Greek Life organizes recognized fraternities and sororities into four councils: the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Collaborative Greek Council.
This year, 2005 IFC President Jeff Skalka said he hopes to make the week a time in which “tighter bonds will be made between all organizations.” He said he also hopes to promote the idea of a unified and strong group of students all sharing a love of Greek life.
With more participation and enthusiasm this year, Skalka also looks forward to future events for the Greek Community, “We hope to continually do more for the Greeks at State, and possibly plan more events for all to participate in.”
The group scheduled more meetings to plan the upcoming festivities, and Schwartz said she is confident in the ability of the organizers to conduct a successful celebration in the spring.
“We have the best of the best in leaders from all the organizations working with us,” Schwartz said.
