NC State University’s Black Students Board will operate as a registered, instead of a recognized, student organization starting Jan. 1, 2026.
This decision to retract the Black Students Board’s recognition and change their categorization to a registered student organization was announced in a statement on the group’s Instagram page late Monday night, citing the need to comply with federal and state guidelines. The move will require a complete restructure of the organization.
“We want to acknowledge the impact this may have on our community and assure you that we are committed to keeping everyone informed as we transition to becoming a registered student organization,” the statement reads.
Recognized student organizations, which BSB currently is, are funded annually and student-led, often receiving support from a University-provided advisor. Registered student organizations must renew memberships by the semester, request funding as needed and require a member of staff or graduate student to supervise the activity. This shift means that the organization will have significantly reduced funding and support.
In a statement posted to their Instagram, the University Activities Board said the change impacts how BSB will carry out their mission to “foster unity among students of the African Diaspora and the greater NC State community,” and announced their intent to continue supporting the organization.
“We find it crucial to acknowledge their demotion on campus, and we fully intend to continue supporting BSB in their transition to being a ‘registered’ student organization,” the statement reads. “The Black Students Board’s legacy and commitment will continue throughout our campus.”
